Borrowing from the Eastern Han astronomer Zhang Heng’s representative work “Zhang Heng’s Commentary on the Celestial Sphere,” he states: “The universe is like an egg. The celestial body is round like a bullet, and the earth is like the yolk of an egg, isolated within the heavens. The heavens are vast, while the earth is small. There is water within the heavens, which envelops the earth, just as the shell encases the yolk. Heaven and earth each stand on their qi, floating on water. The circumference of the heavens is 365 degrees… The heavens rotate like the movement of a wheel, endlessly circling, its shape is round, hence it is called the universe.”
